State of the Union
Tonight, watch George Bush delivering his State of the Union at 8pm. We will discuss his speech tomorrow in class.

Your Nexus and your copy of Fahrenheit 451 are also due tomorrow.

Bradbury Slam!

Your creative Bradbury piece is due next Monday January 29th.

I have copied the assignment I gave you in class below.

Think of the elements of Ray Bradbury’s style in Fahrenheit 451:
• Lots of metaphors and similes
• Paradoxes
• And…And…And…And…And…
• Sentence Fragments
• Run-Ons
• Symbols and Symbolic Names
• The vocabulary: lozenge, proboscis, dictum, trajectory, centrifuge, ballistics, gullet, cacophony, tamped, luminescent, stolid, dentifrice, saccharine, phosphorescent, perfunctory, liquefaction, juggernaut….
• Made-up words (Use yours?)
• Allusions: The many references to literature, to the words of poets and playwrights, essayists and novelists

With all of this in mind, imagine a scene in a grocery store, on the train, in a bookstore, in the cafeteria, in a classroom, on the soccer field, in your bedroom, in your kitchen, with your family, on another planet, in a virtual world, on a roller coaster, with friends, with strangers, with pets…

…and write a story (minimum of three paragraphs) describing the scene, the event, the story using Ray Bradbury’s style.

Exaggerate, play, push, mock, experiment, contrast, take risks with your words and images.
