Here is Alexa and Julian sharing our advisory's ideas for future "Diversity Days." What did you think of the activities last Friday? What worked for you? What did you learn? What did you learn you need to learn? Offer constructive feedback in comments below.

By the way, make sure you are studying each night for the Constitution test on Thursday!

I think the most useful/interesting workshop [that I was in] was Privilege of privilege. It was really just about how things are not at all equal, some people get things without trying and others have to fufill something else to get the same thing. Like, lack of equality.

We should completely have this sort of thing more often... or atleast it should be started in 5th grade. It would be cool if we had a "something day" for other stuff as well.

I think the activities were not what I expected them to be. It was a nice break from the Schedule. I didn't learn anything becasue my parents hammered these thing into my head when I little. So I didn't get anything out of it.

Mrs. Yourist
I thought the sticks and stones activity worked because it made me realize that the words people say to each other every day mean more than just say female dog. These words have meanings that past their origins are more hurtful than just an "oh well i just said it once its no big deal" type thing. And even something as harmless as a bundle of sticks can turn into a slur against a group of people. Another thing that worked for me was hearing all of the responses to the questions.

response to akivlam:
We should to this type of thing more often because it helps us realize the meaning and the hurtfulness of these words. Other days would help. It would be nice if we did other "something days" they are helpful and it meant a lot to me
(this is rose by the way)

i learned alot about my fellow class mates. it was good to bond. but i wished it could have been diversity week because it was to much info. in one day. for the bullying activity it was good but there was no activites so it made it really dull. oh yea you were there!! dd (diversity day) was not too bad. but like to every kid, it wasnt as fun as lets say..bowling on halloween wud have been. but the play was good too.

i hope you liked the cards and the platterr.

I didn't have a useful or interesting workshop. The ones I got were ones that i didn't sign up for. I also thought that the day had no meaning and didn't help people who do use racist or hurtful language. Everyone uses this language thinks that it is a joke and they can't realize that they are doing something wrong if all that the school is doing is having workshops. They will just think that they didn't do anything wrong.

My activities were also not what I expected. I thought we were just goin to learn about different cultures, and about stereotypes about those cultures. I though maybe if we had really learned about those in depth, and mistaken stereotypes, it would have been more useful. This would have hopefully gotten more knowlegable about others, and more accepting.

i liked the excents and the ability to learn with friends about all of these things, but in some - it became about personal issues, not the main idea, and there were a LOT of things to choose from, so it made it hard to decide. I think the focus should be more centralized, and these days should occur more frequently.
