America is all about freedom of speech, and that is what America is really known for. In many other countries, people don't have freedom of speech, and often can't take an insult from a writer. PEN is about freedom of speech and trying to say that you should be able to say whatever you want and not have something like a death threat on you. We, as a community are involved in a way because all of our lives, we have had freedom of speech, while all sorts of writers such as Salamon Rushdie, don't exactly. Everyday we are involved by writing whatever we want and not go to jail.Though we may not know it, simply saying what ever you want is getting involed with PEN. It would definitely make a difference if we were involved in petition signing and letter writing campaigns, names on a peice of paper mean more than just names, they have a much deeper meaning, freedom of speech. Being involved in this organization and finding out more about Rushdie would help us find the metaphor for Haroun, and what it truly means.
